Ferrets are intelligent, social, intensely curious, and famous escape artists. A ferret cage must provide ample space for climbing, playing, and sleeping across multiple levels — and it must be absolutely escape-proof. Ferrets can squeeze through surprisingly small gaps and will spend hours testing every latch, door, and connection point. If there is a weakness, they will find it.

Essential Cage Features
- Bar spacing ≤ 2.5cm (1″): Anything wider and a ferret can — and will — squeeze through. Baby ferrets (“kits”) require even narrower spacing.
- Solid floors, not wire mesh: Wire flooring causes bumblefoot (see our bumblefoot guide). All platforms and ramps must be solid or covered with fabric.
- Secure latch locks: Standard spring latches are insufficient — ferrets learn to open them. Look for cages with clip locks or add carabiner clips to every door.
- Full-width doors: Essential for cleaning. Ferrets are messy, and cleaning needs to happen daily. Small doors make this a chore.
- Hammocks and sleep sacks: Ferrets sleep 14-18 hours per day and strongly prefer sleeping in enclosed, dark, elevated spaces. Multiple hammocks are essential enrichment.
